Shotokan Karate is a traditional Japanese, "hard" style of martial arts. As a traditional art, the goal is the perfection of character (discipline). As a hard style, technical emphasis is placed on punching, kicking, striking and blocking techniques. Other martial arts applications such as joint techniques and throws are studied at a more advanced level.
The origins of Karate can be traced back to an Indian monk named Bodhidharma (Daruma in Japan), who brought Zen Buddhism to China and introduced a system of exercises designed to condition the mind and body. These exercises evolved into a method of self-defense, adopted in Okinawa due to a centuries-long weapons ban. More recently in the early 1900's, Funakoshi Gichin organized the first public demonstration of karate-do, and helped establish these teachings in schools throughout Japan.
